Programs of empowerment

Soroptimists empower women and girls through education because educated women and girls are:

  • Less vulnerable to sex traffickers

  • More likely to leave a domestic violence situation and not return

  • Able to access healthcare

  • Less likely to live in poverty

  • Able to raise stronger, healthier families

Live Your Dream Education & Training Awards

Soroptimist's Live Your Dream Awards program is a unique education award for women who provide the primary financial support for their families. The Live Your Dream Awards give women the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.  Every year, Soroptimist distributes more than $2.8 million in education awards to about 1,700 women all over the world.

Over half of our Live Your Dream Awards recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault. Nearly all of the women and families we serve have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, teen pregnancy, and drug or alcohol addiction. Live Your Dream Awards recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation.

Dream It Be It Career Support for Girls

Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls gives girls the tools they need to achieve their education and career goals, empowering them to break cycles of poverty, violence, and abuse.

Although all girls face barriers because of their gender, we prioritize working with girls who have additional obstacles including poverty, unstable home lives, living in foster care, or teen motherhood. Soroptimist clubs work in partnership with girls in small groups or a conference setting to provide them with the information and resources they want and need to be successful.

Ruby Award: Women Helping Women

The Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women acknowledges women who are working to improve the lives of women and girls through their personal or professional activities. Their efforts help to promote the issues that are important to the Soroptimist organization.

Honourees are women who have worked in extraordinary ways to benefit women and girls. Examples of the type of work honoured include: spearheading an effort to open a domestic violence shelter, working to secure health services for low-income women, starting a mentoring program for at-risk girls, or lobbing companies to provide on-site child care.

The program enables local Soroptimist clubs and the Soroptimist organization to thank these women and encourage others to explore ways to assist women and girls. The program begins on the club level, where the type of recognition varies.

For more information on the Ruby Award, or to nominate an outstanding woman for the award, please contact a club in your area.
