The Chilliwack club was founded in 1935 and has over 20 members. 2020 was our 85th Anniversary in Chilliwack.
Soroptimist International of Chilliwack participates in programs on the local and regional level, depending on the specific needs of our community.
We have three major projects: the Live Your Dream: Education and Training Award for Women, and Dream It Be It: Career Support for Girls, and Heather’s Hope Chest.
The Live Your Dream Award helps women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. This Award is given to a local woman who is already registered in a post-secondary education program and has at least one dependent.
Dream It Be It: Career Support for Girls is a one day conference for local girls in high school to work on building their skills to be able to pursue their dream career. At this workshop the girls work together, with members of our club, and professional women who are hand selected based on the fields on employment that the girls select when registering for this free event. Each participant has the opportunity to have an ongoing professional mentor in the career field of their choice.
We are currently in our second year of running our signature project called Heather’s Hope Chest. Named after our longest standing member, Past President and Past Western Canada Region Governor Heather Rollins. Heather’s Hope Chest is our version of a closet that helps women fleeing abusive relationships, aging out of foster care, leaving treatment or starting off on their own with nothing. Our free “store” has household items, like kitchen ware, toiletries, linens, bedding, personal hygiene products, and cleaning supplies etc. that clients of local agencies can access to start their new lives. In our first year and a half we have helped over a dozen women in the Chilliwack area.
