Girls Forum : This project is designed to:
- promote self-esteem in young girls that is not dependent upon physical beauty.
- to de-myth attitudes toward beauty and body image that are promoted by the fashion industry
- to increase girls positive sense of self through presentation, activities and discussion.
Part 1: Based on the Dove “Self Image” the workshop provides girls with an opportunity to identify and assess their strengths and support systems. We also look at societal challenges to a positive self-image and how to overcome them.
Part 2: Cyber Safety: Teaches girls and their Mentors how to protect themselves when using the Internet, Facebook, Chat Rooms, etc. Either facilitated by the Winnipeg Police or a Soroptimist Member, the session includes videos illustrating dangers in cyberspace.
Part 3: Bullying: Teaches girls how to recognize and deal with bullying of all types, whether physical or emotional.
We held similar workshops for the past 2 years, with the help of SFC grants and have expanded each year because of the success of the Forum. Each has been very well received by the community and we received very positive feedback from attendees.
We expect to provide this Forum to 30 girls & 30 mothers/mentors in the 8 to 13 yr age group.
