Colleen became a Soroptimist when she joined SI of the Tri Cities in February 2008. She had worked and studied in various combinations for most of the previous 18 years while completing first a Diploma of Technology from BCIT and then two university degrees. Before returning to school in her 40s she had been a member of the Vancouver Women’s Health Collective and Vancouver Women in Trades. With studying completed she wanted to become involved again with a women’s organization and found Soroptimist.
Since joining SI of the Tri Cities she has been the club’s Membership/Multicultural chair for two years and club President for another two years. She is currently the Membership chair as well as a Region board member.
Colleen loves the international aspect of Soroptimist and the fact that there Soroptimist’s in so many different countries and cultures all working towards the same goal, to transform the lives of women and girls through education and leadership. She has Facebook contacts with Soroptimist’s in all four federations and enjoys the opportunity to meet some of them in person. She looks forward to attending the next Soroptimist International Convention in Istanbul in 2015 as well as SIA Conventions and Region Conferences.
In her non-Soroptimist time Colleen teaches four evenings per week in the BCIT School of Computing. For recreation she attends yoga classes, reads books, and enjoys long walks with camera in hand. The summer of 2012 was an especially good time to capture videos of bears near the Pitt River, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZK84RqsdQw&feature=relmfu
